Examples of Case Questions that we have worked on:
DuPont has just invented a light-weight, super-absorbent, biodegradable material that would be perfect for disposable diapers. What should they do with it?
GE (« We bring good things to life ») has invented a new light bulb that never burns out. It could burn for more than 500 years and it would never blink. The director of marketing calls her into her office and asks, « How would you price this? » What do you tell her?
Interviewer: Our client is Harley-Davidson Motor Company. Its stock fell from €54 a share to €49 a share on news of declining profits. What’s going on and how can we turn this around?
Interviewer: Our client is Coors Brewing Company and for the last 50 years it’s been advertising the fact that a key ingredient in Coors beer is Rocky Mountain spring water. The CEO calls you into his office and says that Coors is considering entering the bottled water market. I want you to analyse the market, identify the key issues and make a recommendation.
Music to my Ears
Our client is the leading manufacturer of musical instruments, best known for its grand piano. The company also manufactures a slew of other musical instruments, everything from cellos and violins to saxophones and drums. They’re also kind of pricey but nothing close to the piano, that’s in the stratosphere by itself. The CEO called us in because he’s thinking about entering the US high-end headphone market. He’s talking about over-the-ear headphones like Beats. He wants to analyse the market and then make a recommendation as to whether the company should enter.
In the Red
Our client is the number one player in the DVD rental kiosk market. They place kiosks in front of CVS (customer value stores), Wal-Mart, 7-Eleven, multiple grocery stores and fast food restaurants. Over the past sever years the client has installed more than 40,000 DVD rental kiosks, but this year, for the first time, they are uninstalling more than 500 units. Last year the company’s revenues rose by 3% to $2 billion and it is projected to stay flat this year and then forecasted to decline for the next several years. The board of directors wants to stay ahead of this trend so they’ve hired you to increase revenue by 10% in the shorn term and then 5% per year for the next 4 years.
